Why should I heed to the Spirit of God and How do I do that? Psalms 25:4-5 says “Shew me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths. 5 Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.”

Psalm 37:4-5 “Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. 5 Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.”

John 10:27-28 tells us “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: 28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.”

What is the voice of God? How do I recognize it? We certainly can listen to the voice of God as we read the Scriptures. That’s one reason it is so important to read the word of God everyday. We can certainly hear God speak through the Preaching of the word of God that’s why Church attendance is so important. But the Spirit of God also speaks to the heart of man. That’s those subtle, small still impulses that you feel in your heart.

The Bible tells us in I Kings chapter 19 that Elijah needed and wanted a word from the Lord. Verses 11 and 12 tell us “And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake: 12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.”

God didn’t speak in the great wind or the earthquake or even in the fire… but in a still small voice.

Ephesians 5:18 instructs us “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;” That word filled simply means to be controlled by. To yield to the impulses and influences of the Holy Spirit.

How can we do that? The next three verses in Ephesians chapter 5 explain how to do that “Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; 20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; 21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.”

Put God first in every area of your life, heed the word as it is preached and heed to the Spirit of God.
