What is Tithing and why should I do it? How much should I give?
Tithing is giving back to God 10 percent of what he has allowed you to make. Some say tithing is under the law, therefore we are free from the obligation of it.
Actually… tithing is before the law. Abraham tithed to Melchizedek before the law in Genesis 14.
Tithing was required under the law. Malachi 3:8-11 tells us both of a curse and a blessing concerning tithing ” Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. 9 Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. 11 And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts.”
Some believe that the curse of not tithing as well as the requirement was abolished with the New Testament. It may be debatable that the cursing carried over, but it is certain that the command was continued. I Corinthians 16:2 tells us “Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.”
The word tithe means 10 percent but now, in the New Testament God has lifted the restraint… we can now give more if we so choose and he will bless the more that we give. Luke 6:38 promises “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.”
There is a blessing that is continued and commanded in the New Testament to tithing. Pray about what God would like for you to give and be faithful in giving.
